Due to the wide variety of pieces I make, I can't carry a stock on hand. They are all made order. This is a good thing because every piece is able to be built around your custom size and taste.
NOT.....what everyone else is doing!
Recently I was offered a seemingly innocent observation...
"A lot of people are doing the stuff you do."
At first I was taken aback. I didn't quite know what to make of it. Did they mean I was tapping into a trend? Or were they insinuating that I was just copying those who came before me?
Shortly I realized that essentially they were correct. I am indeed walking down the same path as many other craftsmen had already traveled. And then I also knew that there was a distinct difference. Frank Sinatra said it best when he sang, I did it my way!
As the hours pass by on a typical work day for me, I find myself harnessing all of the modern tools at my disposal to create a piece I can be proud of. Do you know how I operate most of my tools? With one hand.
This is because my most important tool is my free hand. Every pass I make with my saw or router or sander, is followed by my free left hand gliding over the work I've just done to see if it's acceptable!
Acceptable to me!
Because I have a vision. And I'm always bound by my vision of what the final product should look like. Unwaveringly I strive to reach that vision of beauty and perfection of form.
So when someone buys a piece from me, they are saying that they trust and agree with my vision. And that vision is as uniquely mine as my fingerprints are.
So humbly no....there aren't
a lot of people doing the stuff that I do. Humbly!
